My greatest appreciation goes to Ricardo Reyna who provided this picture of my paternal great grandparents, Maria Amalia Gonzalez Guerra and Pedro Marroquin Perez. Original image is in possession of my aunt Amelia Garza de Garza who provided it to Ricardo, as per his request, for scanning so that he may send it to me. Muchas Gracias Primo! That I know of they had Seven children and they were married on Aug 27 1912 in Guardados de Arriba, Tamaulipas, Mexico. This is the only picture that I have of them. Thanks again Ricardo.

First Colonizers 1751 of Ciudad Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico

The following was extracted from the book by Antonio Ma. Guerra, "Mier en La Historia" translated by Jose Maria Escobar and Edna Garza Brown. Originally published in 1953 and translated in 1989. Published by New Santander Press Edinburg, Texas.

Guerra goes on to state in his book that;

In the Municipal Archives of this place, I found the following authentic documents.

When he say's place he is referring to Mier, Tamauliaps, Mexico. The following was written in 1751 during Jose de Escandon's stay in Camargo Tamauliaps, Mexico.

A list of the first colonizers signing before Captain don Blas Maria de la Garza Falcon to form the new town.

INCONTINENTI, His Lordship, in consequence of that provided in the decree which precedes, proceeded with the registration of families that are found in the place that was named De el Cantaro, and it was made official in the following form:

1. Don Manuel de Hinojosa, who was from the Villa de Camargo, married to Dona Ines de Chapa.

2. Don Juan de Chapa, married with Maria Lopez de Jaen, colonizer, who was from Camargo.

3. Dona Ana Maria Guajardo, widow, registered with those of la Villa de Camargo.

4. Don Francisco Guerra, Married to Dona Josefa de la Garza, registered in la Villa de Camargo.

5. Don Javier Salinas, registered in Camargo, married to Dona Maria Rosa Longoria.

6. Don Jose de Chapa, married to Margarita Pena, registered in Camargo.

7. Don Manuel del Bosque, single, thirty-two years old.

8. Don Gaspar Garcia, registered, married to Maria Gertrudis Barrera, of Camargo.

9. Don Cristobal Ramirez, from those of Camargo, married to Dona Martina de Hinojosa.

10. Don Pedro Regalado Hinojosa, citizen, who was of Cerralvo, married to a daughter of acolonizer, Maria Catarina Pena.

11. Don Juaquin Bazan Pardo, citizen, who was from Cerralvo, married to Dona Manuela Gonzalez, daughter of a colonizer.

12. Don Nicolas Gonzalez, citizen, who was from Cerralvo, married to Dona Ana Josefa Garcia.

13. Don Manuel de Hinojosa, the younger, son of a colonizer by the same name, married to Dona Juana Sanchez.

14. Don Ignacio Gutierrez, citizen, who was from Cerralvo, married to Dona Maria Matiana de Hinojosa.

15. Don Andres Garcia, citizen, who was from Cerralvo, married with Maria Clara Arias.

16. Don Miguel Saenz, citizen, who was from Monterrey, married to Dona Maria de Hinojosa.

17. Don Jose Pena, son of a colonizer, married to Dona Ana Lopez, also daughter of an original colonizer.

18. Jose Bazan Pardo, citizen, who was from Cerralvo, married to Ana Salinas, mestiza.

19. Alonso Garcia Lugo, soldier, who was from this royal squadron, married to Dona Tomasa de la Garza.

It seems as if there were nineteen families with one hundred thirty-eight persons. THE FIRST NINE OF THOSE FOUND REGISTERED IN THIS VILLA DE CAMARGO, which finally became the seat to the numbers which are expressed in their departure, and the other ten, who newly presented themselves in order to populate the referred to the area at their own cost with no obligation to His Majesty, according to the laws, to support themselves with their families and possessions, only from the rivers of el Alamo and el Norte, and to receive military power as civilian soldiers, and in addition, liberties which are enjoyed by other colonizers of this new colony. In sight of this, so said his Excellency, he was ready to distribute lands and adequate water, declaring as he declares, that the aforementioned enjoy all privileges which other colonists of this said colony enjoy. With this the affair was concluded, which was signed by those who knew, with his Lordship, and to which I certify.

Mier in History, Mier en la Historia - Antonio Maria Guerra

It is with great joy that I introduce to you the following book. I say joy since it is an excellent book written by a local historian using only facts. It is a book about a town, Mier, who I clearly remember as a child when I would accompany my father on business trips. I loved playing in its plaza and would admire its church and its towering tower. I never knew the role that that town had played in the lives of its people and its surrounding communities for well over 250 years, and much less the role that it played between the Unites States and Mexico's relations. That is until I read this book. In the following weeks I will be extracting historical and genealogical information contained in this great book, in order to get more people interested in it and also since it indicates where the original materials can be found.

1st Generation

1. Andres Gonzalez (my great-great-grandfather) was born ~~About 1850's~~ Sep 25, 1852 in China, Nuevo León, Mexico and ~~died on an unknown date~~ Jun 26, 1939 Rancho Viejo, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He married Nicolasa Guerra (my great-great-grandmother). Nicolasa was born About 1850's and died on an unknown date. ~~I have yet to find the parents of either Nicolasa and Andres, if anyone out there knows who they are please let me know.~~ The parents of Andres Gonzalez are Francisco Gonzalez Gonzalez and Antonia Salinas Ynojosa and Nicolasa's parents are Gorgonio Guerra and Felicitas Guerra. I found their parents information on the Mier Civil Registry Birth record of their son Jose Benito Gonzalez.

2. Teresa Gonzalez was born on Oct. 15, 1883 in Roma, Texas and died on Jun. 17, 1959 in Garceno, Starr, Texas. She married Aguedo Bazan. Aguedo, son of Gabino Bazan and Antonia Guerra, was born in 1871 in Ciudad Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico and died on Feb. 28, 1932 in Rio Grande, Starr, Texas, USA.

3. Escidio G. Gonzalez was born on May 15, 1886 in Los Guerras, Tamp. Mexico and died on Dec. 5, 1949 in Bishop, Nueces, Texas, USA.

4. Isidro Gonzalez was born About 1887 and died on an unknown date. He married Marta Mendez on Jun. 5, 1910 in Inmaculada Concepción, Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Marta, daughter of Feliciano Mendez and Natividad Rodriguez, was born About 1888 in Roma, Starr, Texas, USA and died on Jan. 15, 1938 in Driscoll, Nueces, Texas, USA.

5. Faustino Gonzalez was born in 1888 in Texas, USA and died on Oct. 30, 1955 in Garceno, Starr, Texas, USA. He married Candelaria Rosa on Apr. 25, 1924 in Starr, Texas, USA. Candelaria, daughter of Francisco Rosa and Rafaela Perez, was born in Jan. 1895 in Texas, USA and died on an unknown date.

6. Maria Amalia Gonzalez (my great-grandmother) was born on Jun. 17, 1891 in Los Herreras, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and died on Jan. 11, 1969. She married Pedro Marroquin (my great-grandfather) on Aug. 27, 1912 in Inmaculada Concepción, Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Pedro, son of Jose Angel Marroquin and Maria Francisca Perez, was born on Aug. 28, 1880 in Allende, Nuevo Leon, Mexico and died on Sep. 6, 1979. See their family.

7. Eulalio Gonzalez was born on Feb. 12, 1894 in Mexico and died on Aug. 14, 1956 in Bishop, Nueces, Texas, USA.

8. Jose Benito Gonzalez was born on Mar. 31, 1899 in Guardados De Arriba, Tamaulipas Mexico and died on an unknown date.

9. Antonia Gonzalez was born on Apr. 23, 1903 in Rancho de Guardados de Arriba, Tamaulipas, Mexico and died on Jan. 26, 1991 in Corpus Christi, Nueces, Texas, USA. She married Enrique Saenz. Enrique, son of Jose De Jesus Saenz and Maris Del Jesus Perez, was born on Jul. 13, 1893 and died on Jul. 13, 1979 in McAllen, Hidalgo, Texas, USA.
