Rafael Garza Sanchez, 1860 Mier Civil Registry Death Record

The following is the 1860 Mier Civil Registry Death record for my 3rd great grandfather. This document helped me and other researchers distinguish between two Rafael's. Turns out that they were first cousins and both used both last names to distinguish each other. Both are listed on the Mier Church census residing in the same town of Arcabuz Tamaulipas. Turns out that the parents of Rafael Garza Sanchez are Jose Rafael de la Garza and Maria Tomasa Sanchez. I have yet to find the parents of his wife Ramona Garcia.

1884 Civil Registry of Rafael Trevino Barrera, Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico

The following is the image and transcription of the 1884 birth of Rafael Trevino Barrera. He was the brother of my 2nd great grand mother Maria de Jesus Trevino Barrera. Their parents are Rafael Trevino Trevino and Maria de Jesus Barrera Pena. This document indicates that Rafael Trevino Barrera was born in Alameda St, on the house labeled 31 in Mier Tamaulipas Mexico. I wonder if that house is still there. This document also indicates that the maternal grandparents of the child were from La Lajilla, which is only a few miles away from El Arcabuz.

1834 Church Marriage of Rafael Garza and Maria Ramona Garcia, Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico

The following document is the Church marriage of my 3rd great grandparents Rafael Garza and Maria Ramona Garcia. I had obtained this document months ago but had not taken the time to transcribe it until now. What I found was very interesting. It indicates that they are related by blood and had to get a dispensation in order to get married by the church. "parentesco que tienen dispensado que es en segundo con tercero grado de consanguinidad" indicates that the marriage was between Uncle and Niece, I say uncle since Rafeal died way before Ramona did, as indicated in various other documents, meaning that he was way older than her. It also means that whomever were here parents her mother more than likely is Rafael's sister.

The following is the marriage of my 2nd great grandparentsr Martin Garza Garcia and Maria Ruperta Lopez de la Garza back in March 2, 1862 in Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Their marriage license was dated February 8, 1862 and I will be posting that one pretty soon. Martin Garza Garcia - 1929 Civil Registration Death Record, Arcabuz, Tamaulipas, Mexico

I had no idea that I would ever come across this document since Martin Garza my great-great-grandfather was born in Jan 30 1837. Good thing he lived to the great old age of 92. With this document I also found another one of his sons that I didn't even know he had. Nicolas Garza. My uncle had told me that Martin does have a head stone at the cemetery but he forgot to tell me which one. This document also indicates that he was buried in the Cemetery of Congregacion Arcabuz.

Ofelia Garza Lopez, 1927 Civil Registration Births of Congregacion Arcabuz Tamaulipas Mexico

Ofelia Garza Lopez was my grandfather's sister. At the cemetery of Los Trevinos, Tamaulipas, Mexico I had found Ofelia's tombstone with a death date of September 15, 1944. The following document indicates that she was born on the 29th of October 1924. So she was 19 years old when she died. At this time she was already married. I need to ask my father to see if he heard anything in respect as to her short life.

Eulalio Garza Lopez, 1927 Civil Registration Births of Congregacion Arcabuz Tamaulipas Mexico

As you all know, due to my last three posts, I have been transcribing the Birth Index from 1925 to 1930 of Congregacion Arcabuz, Tamaulipas, Mexico. Well in the 1927 I found three names too familiar to discard. They were Luciano, Eulalio, and Ofelia Garza. Eulalio is my paternal grandfather and Luciano his brother and Ofelia his sister. I never thought I would find my grandfather in this index since he was born in 1917. It can safely be assumed that the Mexican Revolution may have disturbed their daily lives. Specially anything that had to do with government or maybe Mier was just too far away. But why 1927 why not before, I guess this question will be unanswered. It is interesting to note that the document indicates as them being vecinos (neighbors) of Congregacion Arcabuz. They were probably already residing at Rancho El Ebanito, a good five to 8 miles away. Also let me note that Eulalio's baptism document indicates that he was born in 1919, but I'll go with the Civil Registration birth since I believe it to be more acurate. Before I continue to the 1928 Index here is the Image and transcription to Eulalio's Civil Registration.

Heritage Auctions - A great Genealogy Resource

I do not know how many of you have even heard about Heritage Auctions, but just in case that you have not heard about them keep on reading. A few months ago I stumbled into Heritage Auctions while researching one of my 11 times great-grandfather Luis Garcia de Pruneda and I found the following 1699 document. It indicates that he was governor of Nuevo Santander (East and North Mexico and Southern Texas). The website also had the following description of the document.

Heritage Auctions Description of Images:

Luis Garcia de Pruneda Early Land Grant Signed. 4pp. including integral blank, 8.5" x 12", Monterrey, 1699. Letterhead bears a beautiful stamped crest and spells out the year in print. Sewn binding. Document is beautifully penned and bears the remnants of a wax seal. Moderately aged toned with heavy chipping along edges and small areas of paper loss at corners. Although worn, the document is quite attractive and suitable for display. Very good condition.
This original land grant petition was submitted by José Cantú, in which he states: "I live in the Valley of Pilón... I am a laborer and grower of cattle... on the 25th of May, 1623, General Alonso de León, governor and captain general, gave me my previous grant, which included six caballerias of land on which I have been raising herds... I aver that I am a native of this kingdom and grandson of the first conquistadores and settlers, that Alonso de León sent me down to that area, and I fought Indians there, and now I wish to go to Tamaulipas and take families to settle there."
As noted, Cantú's first land grant was approved in 1623 by Alonso de León; Cantú's daughter married Alonso de León's son (also named Alonso de León). Document is signed by Luis Garcia de Pruneda, who married the daughter of Alonso de León II (Cantú's granddaughter). Pruneda was a noted Indian fighter, governor of Nuevo Santander (East and North Mexico and Southern Texas), and settler of new lands in that region. Artecitas Ranch Cemetery, Starr County, Texas

The following video was recorded by Jimmy Martinez and listed its description as "Lost Cemetery 4 miles East of La Grulla". I thought to myself maybe I can find its name by doing some Genealogy research? After a few minutes I found it, Artecitas Ranch Cemetery, since it is now located in what used to be called Artecitas Ranch located in Starr County Texas.

I did a quick search with the name and dates on the first tombstone belonging to Alberto Ortiz. I found Albertos Death Certificate wich indicates that he was born  I found the following in the United States Census, 1900. Felipe Ortiz is the head of household and listed Anita (Garcia) as the wife with the following children listed; Josefa Ortiz, Inocencio Ortiz, Alberto Ortiz, Franquilina Ortiz, Nicomedes Ortiz, and Petra Ortiz. I have found living descendants in Sullivan City, Texas which is only three miles North of the cemetery. The reason for the family abandoning the cemetery, I do not know. What I do know is that Artecitas Ranch is no longer theirs.

Victor Garcia and Guadalupe Alanis – A Love Story

This guest post is brought to you by Michael Garcia.

After reading a recent post by Moises about his great grandparents’ relationship, I thought I would follow in kind and share a love story from my own family’s history. The following story was told to me by my aunt, with additional information added by her cousin:

My grandfather Victor Garcia was born in 1926 in Los Aldamas, Nuevo León. When Victor was 10 years old his father, Bernardo, died from a gangrenous infection. After his father’s death Victor started traveling between Mexico and the U.S. as a migrant worker.

As a young man Victor fell in love with a beautiful girl from Los Aldamas named Guadalupe Alanis. Victor would later describe her to his daughter (my aunt) as being very beautiful with black hair and green eyes. Victor asked Guadalupe to marry him and she agreed. Needing money to build a life together Victor returned to the U.S. for work. When Victor returned to Los Aldamas he discovered that while he was gone Guadalupe had passed away from tuberculosis.

Distraught over Guadalupe’s passing Victor left Los Aldamas. A year later Victor met and married a girl (my grandmother) he had met in Texas and spent the next 50 years of his life with her.

Using the information I got from the story I tried to find any additional information about Guadalupe. All my aunt knew was what she had heard from my grandfather – and that Guadalupe had a brother named Jose. I searched the 1930 Mexico Census and found two girls around my grandfather’s age in Los Aldamas, both of which had brothers named Jose.

Guadalupe Alanis #1 was born on December 5, 1928 to Antonio Alanis and Maria Alanis and lived just one street over from my grandfather as a child. Her known siblings were: Dorotea (1915), Rosa (1917), Josefa (1918), Carmen (1920), Jose (1921), Antonio (1922), and Ubaldo (1925).

Guadalupe Alanis #2 was born on May 23, 1929 to Alejandro Alanis and Maria Luis Pena and lived a couple of miles from Los Aldamas in Estacion Aldamas. Her known siblings were: Ramon (1920), Alejandro (1922), Jose (1924), and Maria (1926).

Apart from the above information I could only assume that since my grandparents were married in 1949 Guadalupe most likely died between 1946-1948.

If anyone knows anything about this story, or is perhaps related to either of these Alanis families please let me know.
