Yesterday I was once again going through the Tamaulipas Civil Registration at FamilySearch when I noticed that Miguel Aleman was listed. I thought to myself what can possibly be there since most records are up to the 1930's and Miguel Aleman was not made into a municipality until the 1950's. We I'll admit I was surprised that I found the marriage records for Congregacion Arcabuz from 1930 to 1950. All other records listed there deaths from 1930 to 2002. So the first thing I thought of was looking for my grandparents Eulalio Garza (baptism, birth) and Dominga Lopez (baptism) marriage record since my father does not remember when or where they got married.

My fathers eldest brother Horacio Garza was born in July 6, 1941 so naturally I assumed that they must have had gotten married at least nine months prior. A quick search turned up the following documents. Turns out that they got married at Rancho Viejo back in September 26, 1940. What a great way to end this year!

Acta numero diecisiete.

En Rancho Viejo, de la jurisdiccion de Congregacion Arcabuz, Tamaulipas, siendo las diez horas del dia veintiseis de Septiembre de mil novecientos cuarenta ant mi, Trinidad Segovia, Juaez del Registro Civil de este lugar y constituido el Juzgado que es a mi cargo en la sasa habitasion del Senor Pedro Marroquin y estando presentes ante mi el Senor Eulalio Garza Lopez y la Senorita Dominga Marroquin Gonzalez, asi como los testigos senores, Jose Angel Lopez, Fidencio Garza, y Gregorio Garza por parte del Senor Garza Lopez y los Senores Fidel Gonzalez y Modesto Gonzalez por parte de la Senorita Marroquin Gonzalez; el primero viudo, el segundo casado y los demas solteros, todos agricultores y de este origen y vecindad. - En seguida se dio lectura a la solicitud del matrimonio que con fecha veinte del actual, presentaron ante mi, asi como a los documentos que se acompanaron y diligencias que se practicaron con motivo de dicha solicitud, de las que resulta que no hay impedimiento para celebrar dicho acto y que se senalo el dia de hoy para autorizarlo en la casa antes expresada. __ Luego interrogue a los testigos antes mencionados sobre si los pretendientes son las mismas personas a que se refiere la solicitud que se ha dado lectura y habiendo contestado afirmativa mente, me dirigi a los contrayentes en estos terminos ? Senor Eulalio Garza, es la voluntad de usted unirse en legitimo matrimonio a la Senorita Dominga MArroquin Gonzalez que esta presente entregandose por su marido y recibiendola por su esposa y habiendo contestado afirmante nuevamente pregunte a la pretensa Senorita Dominga MArroquin Gonzalez es la voluntad de usted unirse en legitimo matrimonio al Senor Eulalio Garza Lopez que esta presente entregandose por su esposa y recibiendolo por su marido? y habiendo decirlo si, dije en alta e inteligible voz: "Declaro en nombre de la Ley y de la Sociedad que quedan ustedes unidos en legitimo matrimonio con todos los derechos y prerogativas que la Ley otorga y con las obligaciones que impone." Inmediatamente se procedio a levantar la presente acta haciendose constar en ella el cumplimiento de la Ley y haciendose constar tambien que la Senorita Dominga Marroquin Gonzalez obtuvo el el concentimiento de su padre el Senor Pedro Marroquin para contraer matrimonio con el Senor Eulalio garza Lopez. - Que las generales de los pretendientes son como sigue: El Senor Eulalio Garza Lopez, soltero  agricultor, de veintitres anos de edad, hijo legitimo del Senor Eusebio Garza, casado, agricultor, de cincuenta y siete anos de edad y de la Senora Paula Lopez, casada, de cincuenta anos de edad. la Senorita Dominga Marroquin Gonzalez, celibe, de veintitres anos de edad, con oficios propios del hogar, hija lejitima del Senor Pedro Marroquin Casado, agricultor, de cincuenta y seis anos de edad y de la Senora Amalia Gonzalez, casada, de cuarenta y ocho anos de edad, todos originarios y vecinos del municipio de Mier, Tamaulipas. - Presentes los cinco testigos senores Jose Angel Lopez, Fidencio Garza, gregorio Garza, Fidel Gonzalez, y Modesto Gonzalez, bajo pretesto de decir verdad declaran y firman esta acta asi como las diligencias que se practicaron y documentos que se acompanaron y que se agregan al apendice del corriente ano bajo el numero diecisiete que es el que le corresponde a la presente acta de la que previa lectura firman los interesados y testigos de conformidad de lo que Doy Fe - El Juez del Registro Civil - Trinidad Segovia - Eulalio Garza - Dominga Marroquin - Daniel Marroquin - Jose Angel Loepz -Fidencio Garza - Fidel Gonzalez - Gregorio Garza - Modesta Gonzalez - Eusebio Garza - Pedro Marroquin - Amalia Gonzalez - Rosa S. de Marroquin - Elvira Gonzalez - Juana Marroquin - Narciza Garza - Rubricas."

Using Google Books In Your Genealogy

For those of you that already use Google Books let me know how you are using it and for those of you that have not used it or do not know what it is keep on reading. 

What is Google books?

        Ill put it very simple it is an online library/book store. You can browse millions of books and get a preview of them before deciding to buy the book. Also, lets not get discouraged, Google books also has thousands of free titles that after you add them to your library (Google account needed) you can read them online or on the go with your iPad or Android device by downloading and installing the required application (links on bottom of page).

How can this help me in my Genealogy Research? 

        Well it might or might not but it sure does not hurt to try it out. The way I use it is to search for ancestor names and see what comes up, I also like to try out town names to see where it has been mentioned before, and finally I use it to research topics and or find material that can help me better understand things.

Get Book

For example:

        I am currently reading, Barbarous Mexico by John Kenneth Turner. In this book he provides a first hand account of slavery and forced labor in Mexican Aciendas before the Mexican Revolution of 1910. He also describes how Mexico tried to commit Genocide with the Yaki Indians of Sonora Mexico. It is giving me a better understanding of just a few of many things that led up to Mexico's Revolution.

Ancestry App for Android - How I am Using It

By now I am pretty sure that almost if not all of you have heard about the Ancestry App for android is out. If I am not mistaken it was released on December 21st. I had previously played with it on a friends Ipad but had heard that it was limited to only 10,000 names, if true or not I am not sure do don't quote me. 

Well anyways I have a Kindle Fire and I really like the application since it downloaded my 15,000 plus database and it is also available offline. Since I mainly use it to just display it to family members and also easy way to have it available at a moments notice. If you have not done so here you can get it Ancestry App. You can also read more about it.

Please note that in order to get your tree into the app you have to upload your gedcom to your Ancestry.com account but the good thing is that it is free to create an account and have your tree online. Just make sure to select the appropriate security settings for your tree.

Ygnacio (El Tio Nacho) Marroquin Gonzalez - 1927 Arcabuz Civil Registration Birth Record

This is the 1927 Civil Registration of Ygnacio Marroquin Gonzalez and for those that knew and loved him El Tio Nacho. Ygnacio was my grandmother's, Dominga Marroquin, brother. As a young child I remember always going with my father to visit his uncle Tio Nacho at his ranch. He would always come out and greet us with a smile in his face and then chairs would be brought out and always coffee would be served. Then his wife would always prepare something to eat, no matter at what time of the day we might have dropped by, and boy you could not say no to their food since this would mean a lack of respect. As a kid I also remember helping him turn the spiga (grass looking thing to make brooms) a whole acre worth. Years latter maybe due to old age he moved into town (El Arcabuz, Tamauliaps, Mexico). We visited him several times with the last being about two years ago. He died this year on July 6, 2011 but due to the heavy violence that is plaguing Mexico was unable to attend. I am very glad that I was able to find this document.

En Arcbauz, Tamaulipas. a horas que son las nueve del dia 5 cinco del mes de Septiembre de 1927 mil novecientos veintisiete, ante me Matias Reyna, Jues del Registro Civil de esta municipalidad, comparecio el Senor Pedro Marroquin quien manifesto ser vecino de este lugar, casado labrador, de 42 cuarenta y dos anos de edad y quien presento a este jusgado a un nino vivo manifestando que es su sexto hijo legitimo y que lo tubo con su esposa la Senora Amalia Gonzalez de 32 treinta y dos anos de edad. Que son abuelos paternos del nino el Sr. Jose Angel Marroquin, ya finado y la Senora Francisca Perez Vda. de Marroquin y abuelos maternos el Senor Andres Gonzalez y la Senora Nicolasa Guerra, vecinos de Cd. The History of El Arcabuz, Tamaulipas, Mexico

I want to thank Jose Garza for providing the following. It is an article from a Newspaper but unfortunatly I can't site the source since it was not provided. It was probably writen between 1950 to 1990's I can tell due to some clues written in it. Like the Municipality change from Mier to Miguel Aleman wich took place in the late 1940's and a reference toa dirt road, wich now has been paved since about 1995. If any one knows where it came from please lets us know with a comment.

El Arcabuz pertenece a la jurisdición de Miguel Alemán en el Estado de Tamaulipas; se localiza dentro de los 26 grados latitud y 99 grados longitud. Tiene el privilegio este poblado que su nombre no lo repite otro lugar de nuestra república. La palabra Arcabuz es de origen alemán;  Hakenbüchse que significa Hakengarfio y Büchse cañon de fuego usada a principio de siglo dieciseis. 

Los residentes de este lugar cuentan la versión que escucharon de sus antepasdos y todos coinciden en esta leyenda: Narran que su nombre viene de esta arma de fuego, porque hace siglos al cruzar el río San Juan a una persona de los primeros pobladores que llevaba su arcabuz se le fue al fondo del río en ese lugar y que jamás lo encotraron y que a partir de entonces empezaron a referirse a ese sitio como el lugar donde se perdio el arcabuz y de allí tomaron el  nombre de su pueblo. 

En nuestro mapa de Tamaulipas, tal vez por tratarse de un pequeño poblado no aparece. Lo encontre en un croquis que tiene la forma del mapa del municipio de Miguel Alemán, allí lo localice y lo ubican al sur de su cabecera municipal y para llegar allá hay que seguir un camino que pasa por Mesquititos, Los Guajillos, Alta Vista, La Ceja, Los Treviños cruza un arroyo siguen Los Marroquines, Los Altos, y se llega al Arcabuz. Este camino requiere más de 90 minutos para hacer el recorrido partiendo ya sea de Mier o de Miguel Alemán. 

Los que tienen familiares en el Arcabuz y residen en Los Estados Unidos del Norte  y pasan por Camargo, siguen una ruta diferente que es más largo pero usan una carretera pavimentada. Llegan  a General Bravo, Nuevo León, siguen a Doctor Coss, pasan a Estación Aldamas, aquí Cruzan el Río San Juan por un Puente, siguen hacia El Barrio y de este lugar al Arcabuz por un camino de tierra. En cinco minutos llegan a su destino. 

En el lado oriente de Arcabuz se encuentra San Antonio de Reina quedando frente a La Lajilla, N.L. 

Por espacio de más de dos siglos pertenecieron a la jurisdicción de Mier, ahora son de Miguel Aleman y desgraciadamente de una y de la otra fue el poblado más distante de la cabecera municipal. 

En 1753 se funda la Villa de Mier, con algunos pobladores de Camargo. En 175 hace Tienda del Cuervo a la colonia del Nuevo Santander hoy Tamaulipas una inspección de las obras de Conde de Sierra Gorda Don José de Escandón. En esas, fechas no encontré inscrito el nombre de Francisco  Ángel de la Garza Cervera con la  Merced Real  de la porcion numero 14 con superficie de dos sitios de Ganado menor y 6 caballerias. 

Don Francisco Ángel de la Garza Cervera, fue el dueno original del Rancho El Arcabuz. El recibió su porción por Merced Real el 21 de Julio de 1767, sin embargo, no fue en esa fecha cuando fundó su rancho. 

Don Francisco Ángel de la Garza Cervera, nació en Cerralvo en el año de 1736, fueron sus padres Francisco Javier de la Garza, ordinario de Cadereyta, N.L. que casó en 1734 con María Felipa Cervera Hinojosa originaria de Cerralvo. Francisco Ángel queda Huerfano de padre y su madre doña Felipa toma segundas nupcias con don José Vela. Francisco Ángel de la Garza Cervera casó en Cerralvo el 16 de diciembre de 1757 con doña Cayetana Peña y los primeros hijos de su matrimonio nacieron en ese lugar. 

No es possible  fijar una fecha exacta de la fundación del rancho El Arcabuz, porue don Francisco Ángel y doña Cayetana registran el bautizo de su hijo Pablo José en 1768 y dicen que nació en el Rancho de Peña Blanca que era propiedad de su padrastro José Vela. Y nueve años después en 1777 vuelve hacer otro registro de su hijo Carlos Valentín y entonces si declara que esa criatura  es nativo del Rancho El Arcabuz. Por  esta razón no me atrevo asegurar algo definitivo sobre la fecha de su fundación.  

Con más precisión seguiré guiándome con los censos del año 1782. Aparece una anotación y dice: Que la Villa de Mier rumbo al sur en el río que llaman de San Juan y donde termina la jurisdicción de la Villa, está el Rancho El Arcabuz a distancia  de 11 a 12 leguas y en él se encuentran las siguientes familias: Francisco de la Garza Cervera casado con Cayetana Peña y sus hijos 1 María de San Juan, 2 José Marcelino,3 María Balbina, 4 Pablo José,5 Juan José, 6 María Salome, 7 Carlos Valentin y 8. José Rafael Garza Peña. Anotan en el mismo censo como residente a José González, casado con Gertrudis Peña y sus hijos: 1. José Antonio. 2. Francisca Tomasa, 3. José Andres,4 Juan Nepomuceno, 5. María Tomasa y José Damacio Pérez López. El total de pobladores del rancho El Arcabuz en el censo de 1782 fueron tres familias con 22 habitantes. Comparándolo con el censo de 1820 hay diferencia porque allí dicen  que es San Andres Del Arcabuz y cuentan en esa fecha con 12 familias y con 60 habitantes. 

El dueño del Rancho El Arcabuz, Don Francisco Ángel de la Garza Cervera, se enterró el día 17 de febrero de 1811, que murió en el rancho de La Arcabuz a los 90 años segun el acta de entierros pero son 75 años pues él nació en 1736 casado con Cayetana Peña la que deja viuda. Doña Cayetana murió en Mier y fue enterrada el 13 de Julio de 1824 a los 75 años de edad. 

En el acta de defunción de doña Felipa Cervera Hinojosa madre de Francisco de la Garza Cervera dice que murió de vieja a los 100 años y fue viuda de primeras y segundas nupcias, fallecio en el Arcabuz y enterrada en Mier el 31 de enero de 1802. El apellido Cervera también lo acostumbraban como Selvera.  

La porción número catorce de Don Francisco de la Garza Cervera era de forma rectangular, hacia  cabecera en el río de San Juan y en su rumbo norte el fondo colindaba  con las porciones que encabezada en el río Bravo. El Poblado el Arcabuz permanecio fiel a su cabezera municipal Mier por más de dos siglos y aun cuando les parece incredible en el año de 1950 los habitantes tomaron una decisión histórica y gracias a ella fue possible que San Pedro de Roma, hoy Ciudad Miguel Alemán, consiguieron independizarse de Mier. Había una poderosa razon para justificar la importanciae del pueblo del Arcabuz, ya quees el núcleo de sus habitantes. Completaban el numero requerido por la ley para  independizarse de Mier. 

Fueron los pobladores del Arcabuz los que inclinaron balanza en favor de Miguel Alemán, al aceptar adherirse  al Nuevo municipio. Consideran a los habitantes del Arcabuz como las personas más narigudas del municipio de Mier y aun persiste esta creencia que en nada los ofenderá porque no debemos de ignorar que nuestros órganos, tanto de los oidos como la nariz nunca dejan de crecer, es decir, este es un defecto de los humanos y no es exclusivo de los residentes del Arcabuz. 

Don Francisco de la Garza Cervera y Doña Cayetana Peña es mi séptima generación ascendiente por mi linea paterna. Su hijo numero 2 Don Marcelino Garza Peña , se casó  con Francisca Sáenz González y tuvieron entre otros hijos a Rafael Garza Sáenz que casó con doña Matiana Moreno de su matrimonio nace Santiago Garza Moreno que casó con Casimira Ramírez Hinojosa, en su matrimonio tuvieron un solo hijo que fue Manuel Garza Ramírez casado con Gertrudis Pérez Garza y de este matrimonio es descendiente Ernesto Garza Pérez, casado con Herlinda Sáenz Garza que son mis Padres.

Y Profesor  Roberto Ramírez Guerra de Miguel Alemán, al profesor Alfonso Ramirez Guerra de Miguel Alemán, a la maestra señora  Estela Cordero de Espitia originaria de Mier y residente en esta ciudad y al Sr. Isauro Garza de cerro Azul vecino de Arcabuz.

I noticed a few days ago that The Portal To Texas History had recently added a lot of issues of the Rio Grande City Herald.  I thought to my self, lets do a quick search. I entered my father in laws name Heraclio Perez and on the first result I found a picture of him as well as all of the graduates of the Rio Grande City High School Class of 1974.
