Los Marroquin de el Valle de Santiago del Guaxuco - Book by Lee James Nichols

If you keep up with my blog then you are already aware that my paternal grandmothers last name was Marroquin. So you can imagine the excitement that I had when I found this book, Los Marroquin de el Valle de Santiago del Guaxuco - by Lee James Nichols, at the University of Texas Pan American.

First of all, many thanks to the author for donating it to the University,  Second of all, if you are a Marroquin or have Marroquin ancestors this is defenetly the book to check out.

The author lists his ancestors all the way back to the marriage of Nicolas Marroquin and Francisca Rodriguez on 1-9-1707 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

If you do not have access to UTPA and really want to get a hold of this book you can always buy it for $55.00 at Borderlands Book Store.

Manuel Marroquin Valdez and Guadalupe Rodriguez Silva, 1830 Church Marriage in Santiago de Guajuco, Nuevo Leon, Mexico

This is the 1830s Church marriage record of my 3rd great grandparents, Manuel Marroquin and Guadalupe Rodriguez. Manuel Marroquin was the son of Juan Jose Marroquin and Maria Gertrudis Valdez. Guadalupe Rodriguez was the daughter of Jose Antonio Rodriguez and Maria Ygnacia Silva. This document is vey interesting since it indicates that they are related by 3rd and 2nd grades of consanguinity, meaning that they were related. Manuel's maternal grandmother was Maria Antonia Rodriguez and might be related to Guadalupe's father Jose Antonio Rodriguez. Unfortunately I have not been able to find the grandparents of Guadalupe Rodriguez in order to have a clearer picture of there relation.

Horacio Garza Marroquin, Jul 6 1941 - Apr 13 2008

My uncle Horacio Garza Marroquin was born July 6, 1941 the eldest son of Eulalio Garza Lopez and Dominga Marroquin Gonzalez. Today marks the anniversary of his too early death on April 13, 2008. My earliest memory of him is when I was about six years old and I was for some reason walking to the ranch from school alone. As I was going down the hill from Los Trevinos I heard a truck coming and as I turned around I saw the coolest truck I had ever seen, it was a black four by four truck with tires as tall as I was. I was amazed when the truck stopped next to me and the door opened, it was my uncle the one driving it. He asked as to what I was doing so far from the ranch and when I told him that I was on my way home from school he just smiled and said hop on I'll take you home. I told him that it was a nice truck and he just smiled saying that he had just bough it.

I always admired him and it must have been due to the fact that everyone who new him where never short of stories to tell about him. Specially the stories that my dad would tell about his older brother. I also remember those stories he would tell.

Well here is a video that one of his sons made about him and some pictures that I extracted from the video. When I get a chance to I'll be posting stories about him and for any family members reading this, post your stories about him on this page or email them to me.

Civil Marriage of Eulalio Garza Lopez and Dominga Marroquin Gonzalez at Rancho Viejo, Tamaulipas, Mexico

Dominga Lopez and Eulalio
Garza about 1980's
Yesterday I was once again going through the Tamaulipas Civil Registration at FamilySearch when I noticed that Miguel Aleman was listed. I thought to myself what can possibly be there since most records are up to the 1930's and Miguel Aleman was not made into a municipality until the 1950's. We I'll admit I was surprised that I found the marriage records for Congregacion Arcabuz from 1930 to 1950. All other records listed there deaths from 1930 to 2002. So the first thing I thought of was looking for my grandparents Eulalio Garza (baptism, birth) and Dominga Lopez (baptism) marriage record since my father does not remember when or where they got married.

My fathers eldest brother Horacio Garza was born in July 6, 1941 so naturally I assumed that they must have had gotten married at least nine months prior. A quick search turned up the following documents. Turns out that they got married at Rancho Viejo back in September 26, 1940. What a great way to end this year!

Ygnacio (El Tio Nacho) Marroquin Gonzalez - 1927 Arcabuz Civil Registration Birth Record

This is the 1927 Civil Registration of Ygnacio Marroquin Gonzalez and for those that knew and loved him El Tio Nacho. Ygnacio was my grandmother's, Dominga Marroquin, brother. As a young child I remember always going with my father to visit his uncle Tio Nacho at his ranch. He would always come out and greet us with a smile in his face and then chairs would be brought out and always coffee would be served. Then his wife would always prepare something to eat, no matter at what time of the day we might have dropped by, and boy you could not say no to their food since this would mean a lack of respect. As a kid I also remember helping him turn the spiga (grass looking thing to make brooms) a whole acre worth. Years latter maybe due to old age he moved into town (El Arcabuz, Tamauliaps, Mexico). We visited him several times with the last being about two years ago. He died this year on July 6, 2011 but due to the heavy violence that is plaguing Mexico was unable to attend. I am very glad that I was able to find this document.

Pedro Marroquin Perez and Maria Amalia Gonzalez Guerra, 1912 Church Marriage in Guardados de Arriba, Tamaulipas, Mexico

The following is the image and transcription of the marriage that took place in the house of Andres Gonzalez in Guardados de Arriba in Tamaulipas, Mexico back in August 27, 1912 between Pedro Marroquin Perez and Maria Amalia Gonzalez Guerra. The image does indicate who their parents are. The image also does indicate that the witnesses to the marriage were Senores Jose de la Trinidad Barrera, Blas Guerra, Pioquinte Garza, and Juan Vela. Pedro Marroquin Perez and Maria Amalia Gonzalez Guerra are my great-grandparents through my father's paternal maternal side of the family. What I found that is interesting is that it states that Pedro was baptized in Los Aldamas, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, but he was actually baptized in San Pedro Apostol, Allende Nuevo Leon, Mexico on Sptember 5, 1880.

Severo Marroquin Gonzalez - A Life Changing Event

The following story was told to me by my father Lauro Garza Marroquin and it is a story about his uncle Severo Marroquin Gonzalez. I will try to relate it as complete as possible since it has been several years since I heard it. Severo Marroquin Gonzalez was born on August 8, 1913 in Rancho Viejo, Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico to Pedro Marroquin Perez and Amalia Gonzalez Guerra.
When Severo was about 16 or 17 years old he used to work the fields and other people would also be hired to work on his fathers property cutting and picking up corn (maiz). He relates that one day Severo refused to go out to the fields and when his father Pedro asked him why he didn't want to go to work he stated that since he was small there was an older kid, Jose Moreno, that would always harass him (amagaba muncho) and would always beat him up. His father Pedro then gave him his 1911, 45 caliber handgun and told him to stand up for himself and to use it if he needed to, he also told him that the gun had only one bullet and to make it count. That same day Severo was making monas de maiz (piramid looking stack of corn to protect it from the weather) when Jose Moreno arrived and started to make fun of him. Jose Moreno yelled and told him te voy a golpear (I am going to beat you up) Severo responded tabien (that's fine) let me just drink some water. Unknown to Jose, Severo had the gun that his father had given him next to the water thermus and as he reached down pretending to get water he grabbed the gun picked it up and fired. He hit him in his right arm, Jose left as fast as he could before Severo could shoot him again. Severo didn't want to kill him, but he did want to scare him. Severo continued working in the field and later on armed men arrived from Arcabuz to take him before the local judge, by this time it had started to rain and he was wearing his red cape. My father stated that by the time they were taking him from Arcabuz to Ciudad Mier a local corridista (balad composer) had already written a corrido about the incident, unfortunately the only part he remembers is "ahy llevan a severo marroquin con su capa colorada, ahy lo llevan a dar declaracion a esos hijos de la chingada" (there they are taking Severo Marroquin in his red cape, there they take him to give declaration to those bastards) . Severo was taken to Ciudad Mier, Mexico where the judged ordered him to serve five years under arrest, he was not placed in jail but could not leave the city, he had to work and make a living without leaving town. Severo used to say that he never regretted it since he met his wife and married her in Ciudad Mier durign that time and also that he became the best of friends with Jose Moreno.
Growing up we were thought to always stand up for ourselves and to never let anyone put us down. We were also thought to never start a fight, nor look for one but when the time came, we had to defend ourselves. The above story is a drastic representation of that belief and it could have had ended with other consequences if that bullet had killed Moreno, but it does show Pedro's (my great-grandfathers) belief that it was OK for a peaceful person to use lethal force to stop a bully.
