The parents of Joseph are Ignacio Martinez and Maria Flores. The parents of Ynes are Pedro de al Garza and Maria de al Rocha.

Jose Gil Lopez and Anastacia Hinojosa, 1861 Church Marriage in Mier, Tamaulipas, mexico

The following is the 1861 Church Marriage record of my 3rd great grandfather Jose Gil Lopez to his second wife Anastacia Hinojosa. He was the son of Lorenzo Lopez and Barbara Rios. Thanks to a 1874 Census of Arcabuz I was able to find that he had married twice and thus found this document.

Marriage of Jose Manuel Lopez and Maria Tomasa de La Garza, 1834 in Mier, Tamaulipas, Mexico

The following is the 1834 church marriage of my 3rd great grandparents Jose Manuel Lopez and Maria Tomasa de La Garza. Unfortunately this documented doe not indicate whom their parents are but it does contain some clues. First of all, from other documents we know that the parents of Maria Tomasa are Juan Jose de la Garza and Maria Gertrudis Cuellar. Now to the clues, this documented indicates that there is an Illicit Affinity in a Second degree, meaning that they were somehow related but not by blood. From research there is only one other Manuel Lopez that was married 7 years prior to Maria Cecilia de la Garza whom was Tomasa's first cousin. This could only mean that the two Manuel's are the same person whom married a cousin of his deceased wife and thus had to get a dispensation from the church. If I could only find the dispensation, that would let me know with certainty. The bad thing is also that on both marriages his parents are not listed. I sure need more research before I can be sure.

Blas de la Garza, 1669 Church Death Record, Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico

The following is the 1669 Church Death Record of my 11th great grandfather Blas de la Garza. The following is a very interesting document, it indicates he left a will and also that some services in his memory should be performed in Mexico City. Hope I get to find his will some day. It is interesting to note that his wife is lsites as Beatris de la Garza but her last name was Gonzalez.

The above is a map that Mary Jo Galindo made from an old one found in Mier. The above image can be found in her dissertation on page 10.

This is a copy from the book Anales y Testimonios del Cantaro. It is a translation of a 1767 document found in the archives of Mier. It also contains all the names of the people that were given the above listed grants. I'll be posting all of them in another post.

14. - A la misma linea hecharon otros treinta y cinco cordeles que hacen mil setecientas cincuenta varas mexicanas, con tantas a la cabezada opuesta, y diez y siete mil de largo, completa porcion, demarcandose en el Paso de la Laja, pidola Francisco de la Garza tambien vecino de Camargo por tener alli sus bienes, y se le deja como a los de arriba.

Translation:

14. - On the same line they threw thirty five strings which make one thousand seven hundred and fifty Mexican varas, with the same on opposite side, and seventeen thousand long, completes porcion, marked in the Pass of the Alaja, asked by Francisco Garza also neighbor of Camargo for having his property there, and is left as those above.

Some Notes:

This few lines in this document granted to my 6th great grandfather Francisco Angel de la Garza a piece of land .91 miles by 8.85 miles long, along the San Juan River in present day Arcabuz, Tamaulipas, Mexico. This document also states that he was from Camargo and that he had property on the land he petitioned for. So it can safely be assumed that he was already living at this location before 1767.

Francisco got married in Camargo, Tamaulipas, Mexico back in December 16, 1757 to Maria Cayetana Pena.

User Request - The Garza's From La Havana Texas

I received the following message from Ramiro Garza, I strongly want to encourage anyone with time to spare to help him out since it sounds like a good project that can at the end benefit others.

Good Morning to All,
    I am Ramiro Garza Jr. from Havana, Texas and I am a full time student at the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg pursuing a Master’s degree in history.  Currently I am preparing to write a thesis about the people, culture and over all trials and tribulations of the Mexican and Mexican-American population of South Texas (specifically Hidalgo and Starr counties).  My father is Ramiro Garza Sr. and is an original descendent of those individuals who settled on porciones awarded to them by the Spanish Crown in the 1700’s.  For many years in my family and I am sure in other families as well across the valley stories have been passed down that land was given by the Spanish Crown to those individuals willing to venture north of Mexico City to what is now known as the Rio Grande Valley.  Then shortly thereafter the story goes the land changed hands from Mexicans to Anglos (eager to grab land illegally or legally from Spanish land grant recipients) due to Texas becoming its own nation in 1836 and then becoming part of the United States in 1845.
    Therefore, based on these stories I have developed a great passion to help put back together the broken links of our rich history.  Like many others before me I have begun tracing back my descendants in hopes of finding direct answers too many questions.  Unfortunately, using U. S. census records and other databases has only yielded information as far back as 1850 which falls short about a hundred years.  Nevertheless, each record as far back as 1850 to 1910 indicates that my forefathers lived in Havana Rancho.  My dilemma at this present time is that I have not been able to trace my family lineage past 1850 and as a result have only identified my Great, Great Grandfather as Patricio Garza who married Petra Garza in 1863.
    From old stories I have been told by my father and his brothers (my uncles) we were original recipients of land by the Spanish Crown in the cities of Camargo, Mier and Rio Grande and perhaps other places in South Texas.  However, at this point it is pure speculation since I am unable to find official documents that prove it.  Therefore, it has become apparent to me that I must seek the help of individuals like Moises Garza who might have access to birth, baptism and marriage records in Mexico.  Once I am able to fully identify my forefathers and distinguish their role during the early settlement of the Rio Grande Valley I can begin laying the ground work for my research.
    Fortunately for me I stumbled across Moises Garza’s extraordinary website We Are Cousins-South Texas and Northeastern Mexico Genealogy because it confirms to me that there is a genuine and unique attachment found in many original descendants living in this region to the land and each other.  If anyone can help me I can be reached at ragar092369@gmail.com or via mobile phone at 956-432-9068.  If for some reason I do not answer the phone please leave a message and I will return the call.

This is the 1802 Marriage record of my 4th great grandparents Jose Carlos Valentin de La Garza Pena and Maria Gertrudis Pena. Carlo's parents are listed as being Francisco Angel de la Garza and Maria Cayetana Pena. Gertrudis parents are listed as Antonio Garcia and Maria Quiteria Alanis. This document also demonstrates that Antonio was laready diseased by the time this marriage occurred and that she was originally from la Lajilla which is a small town not far from Carlos town of Arcabuz.

This is the 1716 church marriage of my 8th great grandparents, Diego Gonzalez de Trevino and Anna Maria de Trevino de la Garza. This document indicates that Diego's father was Diego Gonzalez and Anastacia de Trevino. It also indicates that Anna's parents are Melchor de Trevino and Antonia de la Garza.

Rafael Garza Sanchez, 1860 Mier Civil Registry Death Record

The following is the 1860 Mier Civil Registry Death record for my 3rd great grandfather. This document helped me and other researchers distinguish between two Rafael's. Turns out that they were first cousins and both used both last names to distinguish each other. Both are listed on the Mier Church census residing in the same town of Arcabuz Tamaulipas. Turns out that the parents of Rafael Garza Sanchez are Jose Rafael de la Garza and Maria Tomasa Sanchez. I have yet to find the parents of his wife Ramona Garcia.

16 En la Villa de Mier a los Ventiocho dias del mes de Setiembre de mil ochocientos secenta anos el Sr Encargado de Justicia del rancho del Arcabuz dice a este Jusgado lo que a la letra copio.,, A las once de la manana del dia veintitres de Junio de mil ochocientos secenta fallecio Don Rafael Garza Sanchez de cuarenta y cinco anos de edad casado con Dona Ramona garcia aquien dejo viuda y fueron testigos de haberlo visto Sepultar el cadaber en la fosa comun del Semeterio del rancho de Santa Teresa de Jesus los Ciudadanos Antonio Garza y Matias Ramires el primero de cuarenta y seis anos de edad, estado casado, Oficio campo y tener parentesco con el finado en segundo grado y el Segundo de treinta anos de edad, estado casado oficio Campo y tener parentesco con el finado en segundo grado de afinidad  Ambos vecinos de este rancho quienes no firmaron la presente acta por no saber = Antonio Pena Garza = Trinidad Pena y Pena." Y para la debida constancia mande levantar esta Acta que firmo doy fe = Ambrosio Gonzalez.

This is the 1789 church death record of my 7th great grandmother Maria Gertrudis Vela de La Garza. She was the daughter of Lazaro Vela and Maria Antonia de la Garza. I have yet to find her grandparents. The following document indicates that she died from a snake byte.

Di Ecleciastica Sepultura  Entierro mayor en tercero tramo rotura de tierra de sinco pessos al Cuerpo de Da. Maria Gertrudis Vela Espanola  Originaria de la Villa de Sn. Gregorio de Zerralvo, y vecina de esta desde Nina. Hija legitima de Dn. Lazaro Vela, y Da. Maria Antonia de la Garza. Casada con Dn. Juan Pantaleon Ysaguirre Espanol. The following is the 1826 baptism record of my maternal 3rd great grandmother Maria del Rosario de la Garza. She was the daughter of Carlos de la Garza and Gertrudis Garcia. I have an idea of whom her grandparents were but I have yet to find a document proving it. It is interesting to note that Carlos de la Garza and Gertrudis Garcia were also the godparents for my paternal 3rd great grandmother Maria Tomasa de la Garza Cuellar.

The following is the 1791 Church Marriage record of my 5th great grandparents Juan Jose Gonzalez and Maria Balvina de la Garza. Unfortunately this document does not indicate whom their parents were. I have found other internet sources indicating who are Juan's parents but I have yet to find any concrete sources, so I will not be listing them here. I have yet to find Mari Balvina's parents also.
