With All Arms A Study of A Kindred Group by Carl Lawrence Duaine

Just wanted to make you aware of this great book. I have seen great and bad reviews about it. After reading it I saw why some close minded people may be offended but I believe the author meant no harm and just called it as how he saw it.

Anyways, this is not a book review but in my opinion it is a great and valuable book that every Genealogical Library should have. I highly recommend it to anyone who has deep roots in South Texas, Coahuila, Nuevo Leon, and Tamaulipas.

It also turned out to be very interesting and undoubtedly super informative as Mr. Duaine not only brought to life our common ancestors but also put them on a historical perspective.

Ramos/Cuellar : from Pedro Eufracio Ramos & Bartolome Cuellar of Nuevo Leon to Julia Ramos Cantu of Texas, c. 1650-1983

I was just searching for last names of my ancestors on the FamilySearch's Family History Books and came across Ramos/Cuellar : from Pedro Eufracio Ramos & Bartolome Cuellar of Nuevo Leon to Julia Ramos Cantu of Texas, c. 1650-1983 by Richard Cristobal Hernandes jr. and Mark A. Phillips. Turned out to be an excellent book very well researched. This book contains alot of information not just on the Ramos and Cuellar from Ciudad Mier and Revilla/Ciudad Guerrero Tamaulipas Mexico but also on many other people from the same area.

The author did an excellent job with the family trees and family group sheets. This work helped me fill in many gaps in my research and it is a very good read. It also includes alot of history of the area.

If your interest is in this area and or last names are Ramos or Cuellar then I highly recommend that you download your copy and read it, you can thank me later.

Index to the Marriage Investigations of the Diocese of Guadalajara, Two Volumes Covering 1653 - 1779

If your ancestors lived in the Texas, Tamaulipas, Nuevo Leon, and Coahuila region and had a marriage dispensation before 1779 it had to be granted by the Bishop of Guadalajara since this huge area was under its ecclesiastic jurisdiction.

The good thing is that you do not have to browse through the thousands of records since Raul J. Guerra, Jr., Nadine M. Vasquez, and Baldomero Vela, Jr. have already done it for us. All you have to do is to get a hold of their two volumes titled;

When Crispin Rendon told me in an email that these two books had been the best investment he ever made, I was a bit skeptical until I had the opportunity to browse, search, and find my ancestors in its pages.

Survival The Historical Heritage of La Grulla, Texas 1749 - 1974 a thesis by Narciso A. Guerra and Imelda G. Guerra

I found this book at the University of Texas Pan American's Special collections. If you are from La Grulla or just want to know more about it I highly recommend the following book. "Survival The Historical Heritage of La Grulla, Texas 1749 - 1974 a thesis by Narciso A. Guerra and Imelda G. Guerra".

The authors also list their family connection to the first Longorias of La Grulla. You can also find a full map of La Grulla.

I just wish I had more time to go over it since you are not allowed to take it out of the Library I just quickly browsed through it.

If anyone else knows about any other books about La Grulla or it's people let me know so that I can lsit them here.

Los Marroquin de el Valle de Santiago del Guaxuco - Book by Lee James Nichols

If you keep up with my blog then you are already aware that my paternal grandmothers last name was Marroquin. So you can imagine the excitement that I had when I found this book, Los Marroquin de el Valle de Santiago del Guaxuco - by Lee James Nichols, at the University of Texas Pan American.

First of all, many thanks to the author for donating it to the University,  Second of all, if you are a Marroquin or have Marroquin ancestors this is defenetly the book to check out.

The author lists his ancestors all the way back to the marriage of Nicolas Marroquin and Francisca Rodriguez on 1-9-1707 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

If you do not have access to UTPA and really want to get a hold of this book you can always buy it for $55.00 at Borderlands Book Store.

Recommended Book - Anales y Testimonios del Cantaro

Anales y Testimonios del Cantaro 1986 by Octavio Herrera Perez

If you are familiar with he history of Mier then you probably already figured the title out. El Paso del Cantaro used to be the name of Mier prior to it's founding in 1753.

This book is very comprehensive in Mier's history and it's past international impact. Aside from the history contained in this book, its real treasure are the 101 transcriptions of documents found int eh archives of Mier.

It also contains all the names of the grantees of the Mier Porciones on both sides of the Rio Grande River. 

I almost forgot to mention all the Genealogical information contained within its pages. I can almost guarantee that if your ancestors lived in this area during the 1700's they are more than likely mentioned in this book.

As with other books, this books printing was very limited but you can find a copy at the University of Texas Pan American in Ediburg Texas, in their Lower Rio Grande Valley Special Collection. That's were I was able to get a hold of this book. Check your local University Library to see if they have a copy.

Recommended Book - Antigua Mision de Guadalupe de Los Hoyos

Antigua Mision de Gudalupe de Los Hoyos is a book researched and written by Dr. Ruben Dario Pastrana Guerrero. I had the good luck of finding it at the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg, Texas.

This book is an excellent read and is packed with local history and mainly the history of the Catholic Church in Los Aldamas, Nuevo Leon, Mexico. Dr. Pastrana does an excellent job in describing its struggle and its impact in the community and its place in history.

It contains pictures of the old church and also the new one that replaced it. He also lets the readers know the areas that this Parish served and also lists the records that are currently under their possession and available to researchers.

If you are doing research in this area, this is defenetly a book you want to read. The only problem is that it's availability is very limited but as mentioned before the University has a copy.

Las Villas Del Norte The Pena Descendancy by Carrol (Kelly) A Norquest, Jr.

I want to thank Jose Garza for pointing me to the following book. Las Villas Del Norte The Pena Descendancy by Carrol (Kelly) A Norquest, Jr. I had the opportunity of reading a copy donated by the author to the University of Texas Pan American in Edinburg Texas.

What interested me was that Jose had said that this book contained the 1874 Census for Arcabuz, Tamaulipas.  Turns out that it only referenced another book coauthored by Mr. Norquest that contained the Census. By the way I located the other book and got to see the transcription of the census.

I know, I digress, well turns out that this book Las Villas Del Norte had most of my Pena ancestors in it. As Mr. Norquest explains this book is only based on secondary sources but even at that it is very easy to trace original sources if you follow the authors trail. Also so thankful that I located this book since it has over 900 individuals covering from the late 1600's to present day.

If you have Pena ancestry from Laredo, Revilla, Mier, Arcabuz, Miguel Aleman, Hidalgo and Starr County I highly recommend this book. Also in general, if you have Pena ancestry check it out since you never know you might find your ancestors within the pages of this book. That was the case with one of my friends Joe Gonzalez, he very easily found his great grandparents thus helping him break a brick wall that he had.

Mier in History, Mier en la Historia - Antonio Maria Guerra

It is with great joy that I introduce to you the following book. I say joy since it is an excellent book written by a local historian using only facts. It is a book about a town, Mier, who I clearly remember as a child when I would accompany my father on business trips. I loved playing in its plaza and would admire its church and its towering tower. I never knew the role that that town had played in the lives of its people and its surrounding communities for well over 250 years, and much less the role that it played between the Unites States and Mexico's relations. That is until I read this book. In the following weeks I will be extracting historical and genealogical information contained in this great book, in order to get more people interested in it and also since it indicates where the original materials can be found.
